Batsmen on top in Week One

Week one round-up

At Springfield Park, newcomers Renaissance Youth CC were given a hard time by last season's joint runners-up Centurion Cricket Academy. CCA opening batsman Shipon made 127 not out in an excellent knock, ably supported by Shiplu who made 52. CCA finished on 253/5 after 36 overs, an intimidating target for new boys Renaissance, who despite a brave half century from Rahman, finished on 179/9 after 36 overs. At Millfields, Tower Hamlets were put in to bat and made another big total in their match against Baring Up CC, putting on 248/5 thanks to 112 from Arafat and 50 not out from Hassan. Robin was the pick of the Baring bowlers, finishing with 3/37 from his six overs. In reply, new team Baring started brightly with a 100 partnership between Jimmy and Hassan, but the tail struggled to score quickly and they ended 45 runs short. Finally, Stoke Newington CC won the day in their match against Royal Sovereign on a decent wicket at London Fields. Sovereign were 174 all out after contributions throughout the order, Chris top scoring with 37 and Abulkasim the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3-29. Stoke Newington made it hard on themselves after losing a rash of early wickets, including two of their top order for 0, before some solid batting from Ali Asgar (57) and Abulkasim (53 n.o) steadied the ship and ensured their team started the season with a win.
